Homeless Interim Housing.

This design began during a year long initiative to take a look at homelessness here in southern California. We decided to come up with some interim housing ideas for a place between the street and a permanent home that would be a safe space for people from the streets to stay.

Finding strength together.

There are approximately 58,000 people living homeless on the streets of Los Angeles County. A recent survey released by the Downtown Women’s Action Coalition, a consortium of service providers and advocates, found that nearly half of skid row women had been attacked in the previous 12 months; more than a quarter of them were sexually assaulted.

Women Living on The Streets

Big Mama was a main character in an article in the New York Times and she spoke about the abuse that happened on the streets. She and two other women made sure to place their tents next to each other so they could unite and protect each other.

The “Hive”

This is where I came up with my concept from, the concept of a “hive.” A hive is grouped together and protects the colony that resides in it. This hive for the homeless creates solidarity for women finding strength together by creating separation for four different groups of people. My concept is about creating unity through separation and finding strength together.
