Memory Care Center Space Plan
Problem Statement: The condition of dementia, specifically the behavioral, feeling and emotional aspects of the patients are impacted by how the structure of care paired with the architectural form can influence their experience. Part of this problem is because too often the current model of memory care can leave the residents feeling vulnerable and experiencing an absence of human dignity that is caused by lack of respect, fear, fatigue, and depression.

Design Concept Statement: The inspiration for this design comes from my passion to design for the human dignity that every human deserves. My design idea is to create a sustainable building by using natural materials, a gray water recycling system, passive air and heating and plants all around the building to create a biophilic design. This will create an environment with low VOC’s (Volatile Organic Compounds) so that both the patients and the staff can breathe easily and live in a healthy space. It will also provide the residents with a connection to nature which has been proven to help keep memory care patients calm and at peace. Along with a biophilic design, I will use pops of color to enhance the patients experience and add to their psychological wellness even if they can only remember it for a few minutes. Most of the furniture will come from Carolina OFS because they specialize in ergonomic furniture for hospitals and the elderly. The furniture will provide the residents with comfortable options that are easy to get up from once they sit down and will provide support for their problem areas. One more thing that my design will provide is exercise, games, music and reading spaces for the residents because they are activities known to help with memory. There will be extra wide walkways to accommodate easy movement and all ADA requirements will be addressed.
